TOWN OF MADISON, Wis. — At the end of next month, the Town of Madison will be no more.
The City of Madison and the City of Fitchburg will officially absorb the town on October 31, marking the end of a municipality that predates both cities.
Town officials will hold an open house at Town Hall, 2120 Fish Hatchery Road, on October 26 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. as they prepare to bid farewell. Police Chief Scott Gregory took time to reflect on the town’s history.
“Over 20 years of my career have been spent here,” Gregory said. “Three other police department employees also have over 20 years here and one with 40 years.”
The town was established in February of 1846. The village of Madison sprouted out of the town and then became the City of Madison in 1859. The city then annexed land from the town as it grew.
When the town was first established, its land measured about 36 square miles. Today, it is only about one square mile.
