MADISON, Wis. — A Madison man’s initial court appearance on a number of charges stemming from multiple incidents at a University of Wisconsin-Madison residence hall earlier this week has been rescheduled after he refused to take part in an appearance Friday afternoon.
According to online court records, David Clash-Miller, 20, “actively refused to participate in today’s proceedings.” His initial appearance has been rescheduled to Oct. 6.
Clash-Miller faces eight charges ranging from threatening a law enforcement officer to disorderly conduct with a hate crime enhancer and bail jumping following three separate incidents this week at Witte Residence Hall.
According to a criminal complaint, Clash-Miller threatened students inside the residence hall multiple times between Monday and Thursday. In one incident, he allegedly got upset when a group of students playing pool spoke in Spanish in front of him.
In another incident around 12:40 a.m. Thursday, Clash-Miller allegedly told a student of Asian descent she was going to die in her sleep and “Thanks for giving me COVID.”

UW-Madison police officers responded to the residence hall following the Thursday incident; as they got to the building, Clash-Miller reportedly took off running, leading officers on a foot chase for several blocks.
As the officers arrested him, the complaint alleges Clash-Miller threatened multiple times to kill them.
UWPD said Clash-Miller is not affiliated with the university.
Editor’s note: In an incident report posted Thursday, UWPD said Clash-Miller was 22, but court documents show he is 20.
