MADISON, Wis. — Gov. Tony Evers has ordered flags be flown at half-staff Saturday in honor of Wisconsin Firefighters Memorial Day.
Each year, Firefighters Memorial Day is celebrated to honor firefighters who’ve lost their lives in the line of duty over the course of the year.
“Wisconsin firefighters exemplify the best our state has to offer, putting their health and safety on the line to take care of their neighbors and serve their communities,” Gov. Evers said. “From fire prevention education to emergency response, we are grateful for their service. On Saturday, we honor and remember the fallen heroes who are no longer with us and share our deepest condolences with their families, friends, colleagues, and loved ones. The legacy of their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
Flags will be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in honor of the state’s fallen firefighters.
The day marks the end of the annually recognized Fire Prevention Week, which highlights firefighters’ efforts to keep communities safe around the state. The week typically features ceremonies, exercises, and activities related to fire safety.
Gov. Evers previously ordered flags be flown at half-staff on Oct. 1 to mark the Final Alarm Ceremony and Silent Procession at the Wisconsin State Firefighters Memorial Park in Wisconsin Rapids in recognition of Firefighter Memorial Day.
