MADISON, Wis. — The disappearance of Bart and Krista Halderson — and the conviction of their son, Chandler, for their deaths — will be covered in this weekend’s episode of 48 Hours on CBS.
About eight months after Chandler Halderson was sentenced to life in prison without parole, 48 Hours will tell the story of the Halderson investigation and trial to a national audience, including new interviews with those who knew the Halderson family, the investigators who worked on piecing together the complex case, and reporters who covered the story.
Bart and Krista Halderson disappeared during the 4th of July weekend in 2021 and hadn’t been heard from for several days before Chandler reported them missing. Chandler Halderson told investigators that his parents were at their cabin in northern Wisconsin for the holiday weekend, but when authorities checked the family’s cabin, it was clear nobody had been there in months. From there, Chandler’s story began to unravel.
Bart Halderson’s remains were eventually found in rural Dane County, leading to Chandler Halderson’s arrest. Krista Halderson’s remains were found some time later on the other side of Dane County.
Adam Duxter, who worked for News 3 Now that summer before taking a job at CBS affiliate WCCO in Minneapolis, was one of the reporters who spoke with Chandler hours before he was arrested and was interviewed as part of the 48 Hours episode.
News 3 Now provided CBS News with several hours of previous coverage and footage of the trial to help with the production of the episode. CBS News Producers and 48 Hours correspondent Erin Moriarty flew to Madison earlier this year to conduct the interviews for the piece.
You can find News 3 Now and Channel 3000’s extensive coverage of the case here, including every minute of the trial, which included eight days of testimony.
