MADISON, Wis. — Higher oil prices are contributing to surging gas prices across the country, including in Wisconsin, according to AAA.
The latest data from AAA shows the national average for a gallon of regular gas has gone up to $3.72 as of Friday morning, but prices in Wisconsin are even higher, averaging about $3.86 per gallon. Dane County and the Madison metro area are seeing prices even higher than that, averaging about $3.95 per gallon on Friday.
Surrounding counties are also feeling the sudden surge, with average prices now hovering around $3.97 per gallon in Green County, $3.96 in Jefferson County, and $3.96 in Dodge County. Iowa County is averaging about $3.93 per gallon.
Those are among the highest prices in the state outside of northeast Wisconsin, with several rural counties seeing averages over $4 per gallon as of Friday morning: Oneida County is averaging $4.06 per gallon, Florence County is averaging $4.28 per gallon, Marinette County is averaging $4.02 per gallon and Vilas County is averaging $4.00 per gallon.
The average price of a gallon of gas has gone up by about 30 cents over the last week in Wisconsin and about 40 cents in Dane County, although prices are still lower than they were a month ago when we were seeing prices approaching $4.10 in Madison.
AAA said Thursday that the nationwide price surge is being driven by a combination of tightening supply and rising oil prices. There may be some relief on the horizon, though, as AAA says the price of oil may be slowed down in the coming weeks over recession concerns.
