MADISON, Wis. — Three design teams shared their visions for a reimagined Lake Monona waterfront at the second meeting for the Lake Monona Waterfront Design Challenge Monday night.
Agency Landscape + Planning, James Corner Field Operations, and Sasaki Associates shared their initial ideas for a redesign of Lake Monona’s waterfront from Olin Park to Law Park in Madison. The ideas ranged from boardwalks to bridges to beaches, but all focused on making the lake accessible to the people of Madison while still preserving the transportation thoroughfare.
“It’s gonna be really interesting to see the results of a design contest like this which is really a new thing for the city,” Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said.

The project aims to make the waterfront more accessible, improve water quality and aquatic habitats and preserve the lake’s history and Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural legacy. The Ad-hoc Committee also recommended that plans include a possible expansion of the Monona Terrace and Community Center. The city is also in the planning stages of the John Nolen Drive Reconstruction Project, which is expected to start work in 2026.
“I’m also looking for things that invite people to the water and acknowledge the way that people are already using the lakefront and want to use it more and better,” said Rhodes-Conway.
Monday night, the teams presented general concepts and ideas and received feedback from residents. They will present their final master plans on January 26 at Olin Park.
The final plans will be available for public review and comment before the Ad-hoc committee makes a final recommendation to the Common Council and Board of Park Commission in 2023.
