MADISON, Wis. — Dane County voters have chosen Kalvin Barrett to lead the county’s sheriff’s office.
Barrett won with 76.7% of the vote against Anthony Hamilton, a detective with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.

Barrett was first appointed to the position by Gov. Tony Evers in 2021 after former Sheriff Dave Mahoney retired.
In September, Hamilton was put on administrative leave after filing a civil lawsuit alleging Barrett forced him in 2021 to participate in what Hamilton believed to be an illegal search; Hamilton also alleged he faced retaliation after he raised concerns and shared a video he took of the search.
Both Barrett’s campaign manager and the attorney representing Dane County called Hamilton’s lawsuit without merit and said the detective had previously been punished for taking and sharing the video without permission following the 2021 search.
Hamilton’s campaign claimed his administrative leave was another example of retaliation. While the sheriff’s office confirmed Hamilton was put on leave in September, neither Barrett nor his campaign commented on why. Barrett’s campaign previously said Hamilton’s lawsuit was an attempt by Hamilton to gain political traction.
