SAUK CITY, Wis. — Authorities are investigating after a car reportedly crashed into the Wisconsin River on Highway 12 heading into Sauk City on Thursday morning.
Dane County dispatch said it was first notified of the crash by Sauk County dispatch at about 7:48 a.m. Thursday. Dane County officials are handling the investigation because the crash happened on the Dane County side of the river.
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office tells News 3 Now that preliminary reports from the scene indicate there was only one person in the car at the time of the crash. That person, a 50-year-old man from Circle Pines, Minnesota, was taken to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries he sustained in the crash but is expected to be okay.

Sheriff’s Office officials say the man was driving west on Highway 12 when his 2019 Honda Passport hit a sign and landed in the Wisconsin River. The river’s current then carried the vehicle about a quarter-mile downstream. The man was able to escape the vehicle and was helped out of the water by Sauk City Fire Rescue members.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated.
Crews removed the car from the river a little after 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
