MADISON, Wis. — Badger quarterback Graham Mertz will leave Madison. The Wisconsin starter announced Sunday that he will enter the transfer portal.
“I am grateful for my time as a Badger,” Mertz said. “I want to thank Coach Chryst, Coach Engram, Keller Chryst, our stength staff, our training room staff, and everyone that is a part of this program for making my dream come true.”

Mertz’s announcement comes after Wisconsin hired Luke Fickell to be the next head coach, instead of interim head coach Jim Leonhard who had been speculated to be next in line for the job. Mertz did not give a reason for transferring.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Fickell said he spoke with Mertz prior to the quarterback announcing his decision. Fickell said he asked Mertz to wait before making his choice, but also respected the junior’s decision.
“It’s a tough situation,” Fickell said. “We wish the best for him.”
The Overland Park, Kan. native appeared in 34 games for the Badgers, throwing for over 5,400 yards and 38 touchdowns and rushing for 8 touchdowns. He also threw 26 interceptions.
On Twitter, multiple Badgers posted their thanks to Mertz. Lineman Jack Nelson said the quarterback “exemplified grit and hard work.”

The move raises questions about who will be under center when the Badgers play at the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, though it is likely that backup quarterback Chase Wolf will get the call.
Wolf was sidelined with injury for much of the season, but was able to return and led the Badgers on their final drive of the regular season after Mertz was forced to leave with an injury.
