MADISON, Wis. — Every year, we see multiple college “signing day” events, with local athletes announcing where they will be continuing their careers and education. But on Wednesday, we saw a new twist to that tradition.
Madison’s Operation Fresh Start held its own “signing day” event for Jacob “Jay” Corona Cordero, who recently graduated from the organization’s Build Academy and is now signing on with a local construction company to start his career as a carpentry apprentice.
“This is not the end of my story, because I’m still going,” Cordero said during the ceremony. “My goal still hasn’t been reached, but when I do reach it, I will have new goals that I want to reach as well.”
Cordero will be working for JP Cullen in Madison.
Operation Fresh Start says it is working with community partners to help promote more diversity in construction fields, which are typically white and male.
