MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Metropolitan School District has canceled class for Thursday, one of more than 90 school cancellations and delays across southern Wisconsin.
The decision to cancel class in Madison was made sometime in the early morning hours Thursday, with the district alerting local media just before 6 a.m.
In addition to schools being closed, all co-curricular activities are canceled. MSCR programs and activities are also canceled, including facility rentals.
The decision on whether to close schools depends on the storm, but it largely comes down to safety for parents, buses and those walking, MMSD spokesperson Tim LeMonds said.
While the city of Madison may set a threshold based on how much snow has fallen as to whether to declare a snow emergency and plow side streets, the school district has a different method.
According to the district’s winter weather website, it consults with meteorologists, the City of Madison, Madison police, and transportation providers before making a decision to cancel or delay school. Most of Madison’s main roads appeared to be wet but clear as the decision went out, while neighborhood roads remained snow-covered.
“There’s a weather team that consists of several different disciplines across the school district who begin to work maybe even a few days in advance of an expected weather event,” LeMonds said.
Dozens of other districts also made decisions to either start late or close entirely. You can find an updated list here.
