JANESVILLE, Wis. – The Rock County Historical Society wants to show you why the GM assembly plant was meaningful to southern Wisconsin. It’s the people.
The Rock County Legacies Exhibit features stories, artifacts, and photographs from the Janesville General Motors Plant. It includes employees’ stories in writing, but they don’t have actual audio recordings. That’s one of the aspects of the project that they are working to grow to maintain the legacy.
They have an oral history program set up where people are invited to come in and give their first-hand experience or that of a loved one that worked at the plant. There’s no video. It’s simple and conversational.
“Multiple generations of folks, this is all that they knew,” said RCHS executive director Timothy Maahs. “It was very emotional when it ended, and that led us to interpret it through their voices. There’re so many stories that you hear just by talking to people and those are the things that we need to be documenting going forward.”
You can simply call and make an appointment to meet with staff at Rock County Historical Society or they’ll come to you. Click here to learn more.
