MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources warned snowmobilers Wednesday to be mindful of unsafe areas as ice and snow thins across the state.
“No ice is ever completely safe,” Lt. Jake Holsclaw said. “Even areas that seem thick and covered with snow may be hiding patches of black ice that could break apart under the weight of the machine and riders.”
The DNR gave some tips for staying safe on the ice.
- Contact local sports shops for updates on ice in the area you want to cross
- Wear proper clothing
- Do not travel in unfamiliar areas
- Slow down while traveling at night
- Know the layout of the lake, such as the location of inlets and narrows where currents can thin ice
- Watch out for pressure ridges and ice buckling
