MADISON, Wis. — A man accused of groping a woman on State Street last summer is now expected to stand trial in April.
Ivan Smart, 22, was arrested and charged in July 2022 after he and another man allegedly touched and grabbed a woman without her consent while she was waiting for an Uber after leaving a downtown bar.
According to online court records, Smart’s trial is set to run April 3-7. He’s charged with one count of first-degree sexual assault and one count of false imprisonment as a party to a crime for his alleged role in the attack.
In a criminal complaint filed against him, prosecutors alleged smart and another man led the woman to a nearby vehicle and drove away with her inside after the assault. Smart then continued to assault the woman in the backseat of the vehicle as she fought back and repeatedly asked to be let out, according to the complaint.
Police said they were able to identify Smart as a suspect by using city surveillance cameras throughout the downtown area.
