FORT ATKINSON, Wis. — One person is dead following a crash near Fort Atkinson late Friday night.
A Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped to check on a car parked near the intersection of County Road Q and County Road B in the Town of Aztalan shortly before 10 p.m. Friday, according to a press release.
After the deputy contacted the vehicle and the driver, the deputy smelled marijuana and asked the driver to step out of the car. The driver then reportedly fled from the scene of the stop and attempted to get away.
The deputy chased the vehicle, which ended up traveling south on County Road G. The suspect vehicle pulled away from the deputy, who lost sight of the vehicle.
The deputy then noticed smoke just north of U.S. Highway 12. The deputy checked the area and found the suspect vehicle crashed and appeared to roll several times.
The crash occurred just before 10:15 p.m. Deputies checked the condition of the man but were unable to find a pulse and determined the driver was trapped. Fort Atkinson Fire and EMS responded and found him dead at the scene.
The identity of the driver will be released once the family is notified.
The incident was turned over to the Wisconsin State Patrol and remains under investigation by their agency.
