JUNEAU, Wis. — Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said Tuesday that the county is prepared to handle its current lack of state prosecutors.
Dodge County was put in a tough position last week after District Attorney Kurt Klomberg put in his resignation. That move, combined with the retirement and departures of other attorneys, left the county with zero full-time state prosecutors.

“Certainly, this has the appearance to be troubling for law enforcement and will no doubt create challenges for the district attorney’s office,” Schmidt said.
However, Schmidt said his office is up for the task, and their work will not change.
“We will continue to make arrests, request charges, and work with those prosecutors who are available,” Schmidt said. “We have overcome challenges in the past and we will overcome these challenges as well.”
Schmidt said district attorneys from nearby districts have called him and offered their assistance. The state also assigned multiple retired prosecutors to fill in until a new district attorney and prosecutors are appointed.
“For Dodge County residents, this means that you have no need to fear that criminals will be let out because a prosecutor is not available,” Schmidt said. “It may be a bit slower than we are used to, but the work will continue.”
