MADISON, Wis. — The Dane County Humane Society is asking for help covering the cost of care for two injured aquatic birds until staff members can find them a permanent home.
Both birds — a pelican and a swan — have injuries that will not allow them to be released back to the wild, the humane society said Friday.
The pelican was brought to the humane society’s wildlife center on Nov. 15 after being found in the snow in Vernon County unable to fly. The bird suffered multiple rib fractures, a beak fracture and a puncture wound on its shoulder, among other injuries.
The swan, meanwhile, was admitted on Dec. 5 after being found in Crawford County. It had suffered eye trauma, lice, a fractured wing bone, lead toxicity and puncture wounds on its feet.
Both birds have made progress in their recovery, but the humane society is hoping to raise $2,500 to help care for them until they can go to a licensed wildlife facility, bird sanctuary or zoo.
