The Jo Daviess County Communication Center now can receive text-to-911 messages from wireless customers in an emergency. According to a release, text-to-911 only should be used in an emergency when placing a call is not possible, such as if a caller is deaf or hard of hearing, has a speech impairment or would be in danger if they were to speak out loud. Users of the text-to-911 service are asked to send the location and type of emergency in their first text message, avoid texting and driving and text in simple words without abbreviations or slang.
