Residents and businesses will have an opportunity to transform designated parking spaces into temporary miniature parks during an event this fall in Dubuque. The City of Dubuque Sustainability Office and Dubuque Main Street will hold “Park(ing) Day” from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 15-16. According to a release, the miniature parks, or “parklets,” will be created along Main Street from Fifth to 11th streets, Central Avenue from 14th to 19th streets, and Washington Street from Ninth to 11th streets. The release lso states that Park(ing) Day is an annual event held on the third weekend in September in cities around the world to encourage the transformation of parking spaces into temporary public places. In Dubuque, participants will temporarily repurpose curbside parking spaces into public parks and social spaces. Each parking space is approximately 8-feet-by-20-feet. Allowable items include trees, flowers, seating, games, shade structures and other amenities.
