The city of Dubuque last year saw an increase in both the number and value of building permits thanks to several large commercial projects. In 2023, the city issued 1,719 building permits for projects totaling roughly $150.6 million in construction value. That’s a 12% increase in permits issued and 22% increase in overall construction value from 2022 totals. The majority of the building permits issued in 2023 ended up being for residential remodels or smaller commercial renovations. The permits with the highest construction values were issued to large-scale commercial projects. Of the combined $150.6 million value of all permits filed last year, roughly one-third can be attributed to just three projects: the Simmons Pet Food warehouse on Seippel Rd, the Q Casino’s main casino floor build-out, and renovation and conversion of the former Holy Ghost School building into apartments on Central Ave.
