A man who illegally returned to the United States after being deported four times and was living in the tri-state area has been sentenced to federal prison. 30-year-old Pedro Guzman-Matom, a citizen of Guatemala who was residing in Dubuque, recently was sentenced to one year in prison in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa states that Guzman-Matom pleaded guilty Nov. 8 to one count of illegal reentry into the U.S. after having been deported. Guzman-Matom previously was deported in November 2012, March 2013, February 2017 and August 2019, the press release states. Immigration officials learned Guzman-Matom illegally had returned to the U.S. on Sept. 18 when Guzman-Matom was an inmate in the Dubuque County Jail on a charge of operating while intoxicated.
