MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — Milwaukee police are investigating a shooting that took place at Serenity Funeral Home near Fond Du Lac Avenue and Townsend Street on Wednesday.
Officials say seven people were shot, both men and women, from 24-48 years of age.
The victims were transported to a local hospital and are said to be in stable condition with various injuries.
Police seek an unknown suspect at this time.
According to Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, someone driving past the funeral home opened fire on individuals getting ready to go inside.
“This is an example of the insanity that we’re seeing with the number of guns, particularly illegal guns, on the streets in the city of Milwaukee,” Barrett said. “After four consecutive years of reductions in homicides and nonfatal shootings, this year we have seen a dramatic increase here in the city of Milwaukee and it is not acceptable to me, it’s not acceptable to the residents of this city and I know it’s not acceptable to the police chief and the members of the police department.”
Cedric Guy, owner of Serenity Funeral Home, said there were about 100 mourners at the funeral home at the time. They were there for the funeral of Braxton Taylor, the 26-year-old victim of a Sept. 17 shooting.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Milwaukee Police Department at 414-935-7360 or Crime Stoppers at 414-224-TIPS.
