MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Reading Project’s Books for Educators initiative is underway just ahead of the start of the school year.
Beginning Tuesday, teachers are able to sign up for one of 300 appointments to pick up 25 free books for their classrooms. This school year, Madison Reading Project said it plans to give away 25,000 books.
“We know that teachers often have to spend their own money on classroom supplies – whether that’s books, decorations, you name it – and our organization provides free books. We thought that was just the perfect collaboration to mix brand new books for teachers and educators no matter what grade they are,” Rowan Childs, the group’s executive director, said.
The books are organized by grade level and subject to make it easier for teachers to find relevant materials. That’s especially helpful for teachers who may be changing grade level or may be trying to diversify their reading materials, she added.
Madison Reading Project buys the books throughout the year using its scale to get discounts where possible, Childs said. Grants and fundraising help cover some of the costs.
