MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Police Department says it will continue its heightened focus on traffic enforcement into September as it tries to reduce dangerous driving in the city.
In an update Thursday morning, MPD reported conducting 21 “enhanced traffic enforcement projects” — focusing on policing speeding and impaired driving — so far in August, with another six planned for the remaining days of the month.
Another 25 enhanced enforcement projects are being planned for September, police said.

The goal is to reduce the amount of dangerous driving activity that affects pedestrians, bicyclists and other drivers as part of the city’s ongoing goal of reducing traffic deaths. The areas of the city that will see the expanded enforcement are determined by traffic crash data and the “high injury zones” identified by the City of Madison’s Vision Zero plan.

The enhanced enforcement is paid for with traffic overtime grants from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office also taking part.
