MADISON, Wis. — Madison police say they are investigating after a masked intruder was shot and killed inside an apartment on the city’s north side overnight.
Speaking Friday morning, Police Chief Shon Barnes said a 911 call was made at about 2:30 a.m. for a masked intruder and shots fired at an apartment building on the 1700 block of Packers Avenue.
Officers quickly responded to the scene after already being in the area following a report of a break-in in the area the night before, Barnes said. As of now, he does not believe the break-ins were related, but the investigation is ongoing.
When officers got to the scene, they were led inside by a man who lived in the apartment. Once inside, they found a masked man with a gunshot wound, as well as a woman and a small child who lived in the apartment. The masked man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators are still trying to determine what happened and why the home may have been targeted by the intruder, Barnes said, but nobody who lived in the home was hurt. While it is early in the investigation, Barnes said he believes the Castle Doctrine may protect the people who lived in the apartment from being charged.
“[It’s] a very harrowing situation here in the City of Madison, to have something like this happen, to have a homeowner have to defend themselves or have the homeowner have to fire a weapon, we don’t really know all the details, but that’s why we have detectives, we have the best in the business who are going to try to piece together what exactly happened here,” Barnes said Friday morning.
Police are encouraging anyone in the area with surveillance video or doorbell camera footage to come forward to help detectives piece together the events that led to the break-in.
Barnes said identification of the suspected intruder who was killed will come from the Dane County Medical Examiner’s office. As of now, it is unknown if the man knew the people who lived inside the home.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
