SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — Classes at the new Sun Prairie West High School start next week, but the school held a grand opening Sunday.
Community leaders, including Governor Tony Evers, were on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and afterward, students, families and others got to tour the new building. Over 1,300 students are set to walk through the school’s doors next Tuesday for the first day of school.
“We’re excited for this community, to be able to get in – to see this new school,” Board of Education president Dr. Steve Schroeder said. ” We couldn’t be more thankful to the community for what they’re providing to children in the school district.”
Sun Prairie residents passed a $164 million referendum three years ago in order to fund the new school. The original Sun Prairie High School will now be called Sun Prairie East.
“I’m excited for all the collaboration areas,” West senior Maren Kalberer said. ” If you’re in physics but also taking calculus, you’re able to combine those two classes and collaborate in that area.”
The new Central Heights Middle School and Prairie Phoenix Academy also celebrated grand openings on Sunday.
