MADISON, Wis. — A dumpster fire on Madison’s west side grew big enough to damage nearby buildings and trees earlier this week.
Crews with the Madison Fire Department responded to the 7600 block of Carrington Drive around 4:45 p.m. Monday. When they were still several blocks from the fire, firefighters reported seeing black smoke coming from the dumpster.
Once crews arrived, they found a dumpster fully engulfed in flames. The flames extended 20-30 feet into the air, causing the flames to spread into some nearby cedar trees. Heat from the fire also damaged the siding of nearby apartment buildings.
After extinguishing the dumpster fire, crews went inside the nearby apartment buildings, but found no signs of fire, smoke or heat inside. Damage was limited to the buildings’ exterior.
Fencing and the nearby trees sustained major damage. The damages are estimated to be roughly $5,000.
The cause of the fire is undetermined.
