MADISON, Wis. — Madison police are reminding people to be cautious when an unknown caller tries to solicit money over the phone.
According to an incident report, the Madison Police Department was contacted by a Wisconsin resident living outside Dane County on Wednesday morning.
The report said the caller told police they had received an unexpected call from a number with a 608 area code. Police said the caller identified himself as a fundraiser working on behalf of Madison police and was collecting money for injured officers.
Police said the caller hung up when the reporting party told them they were uncomfortable with the call. The person who received the call did not pay any money.
MPD said people should never provide money in the form of gift cards over the phone and should contact local police if they are suspicious of a call they received.
