MADISON, Wis. — Just hours before students return to the classroom, the Madison Metropolitan School District still has roughly 125 teacher positions open, but a district spokesperson said offers have been made for the majority of those roles.
The 125 openings do not account for those who have accepted offers from the district but are awaiting background checks, district spokesperson Tim LeMonds told News 3 now in an email Wednesday afternoon. On Tuesday, LeMonds said the district had 134 teacher openings.
LeMonds also said the district has offers out for more than 100 of the open positions. He did not have an updated number of how many offers were accepted.
Asked if the teachers who have accepted offers could start the academic year in the classroom Thursday, LeMonds said it’s district policy to require a thorough background check to be completed first. That process, he said, could take several days.

In the interim, the district has 275 substitute teachers available as certified, long-term subs, who work 46 days or more. Some of those substitutes could work the full school year if needed.
