MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Symphony Orchestra returns to the Overture Center next month for its 2022-23 season.
The MSO enters its 97th season with a full slate of music from famed composers including Brahms and Tchaikovsky. The multimedia production Beyond the Score also makes its return.
The music returns on September 23 with “Infinite Joy,” as the MSO wishes a happy belated birthday to Beethoven by performing his Ninth Symphony alongside singers from the Madison Symphony Chorus. Principal Oboist Marc Fink will also perform Mozart’s Oboe Concerto to commemorate his 32-year tenure with the MSO.
In October, the orchestra’s program will be “Sublime Violin and Journeys,” with violinist James Ehnes performing Barber’s Violin Concerto. The orchestra will also treat music lovers to Death and Transfiguration by Strauss and Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3.
With November comes “Enchanted Piano and Person Favorite.” Madison’s own Michelle and Christina Naughton will control the keys for Bruch’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra. The program will also include Márquez’s Danzón No. 2 and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, Pathétique.
The MSO will ring in the holiday season with the return of “A Madison Symphony Christmas.” The orchestra will be joined by the Madison Symphony Chorus, Madison Youth Choirs, Mount Zion Gospel Choir and opera stars Adriana Zabala and Nathaniel Stampley.
The new year brings with it “Towering Piano and Virtuosity,” as Yefrim Bronfman returns to Madison to perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. The MSO will also perform Schubert’s Symphony No. 3 and Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin for the first time ever.
In February, pianist Benjamin Grosvenor will make his MSO debut with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3. The program, entitled “Heroic Piano and Premiere,” will also include Montgomery’s Coincident Dances and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 6.
Beyond the Score returns in March. This year’s featured piece is “Mahler: Symphony No. 4 — Heaven or Earth?” The first half of the performance includes live actors and multimedia images, and in the second half, the orchestra will play the entire symphony.
April’s program is “Dazzling Violin and Spring.” Violinist Blake Pouliot returns to perform Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3. The MSO will also perform Britten’s Four Sea Interludes and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2.
The season wraps up in May with the program “Renaissance and Passion,” a performance of Orff’s famous Carmina Burana. The MSO will also perform Price’s Symphony No. 3 in C minor for the first time ever.
