MADISON, Wis. — College radio station WSUM’s annual Party in the Park returned to James Madison Park on Friday.
The student-produced free music festival featured a lineup of nine local artists and eight DJs across two stages and a number of genres.
For those attending, it was a chance to finally see the festival back at its full potential following the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic canceled the event one year and returned the following year on a smaller scale.
“I’d just like to shout out all of the people that have been working so hard at WSUM on this and all the artists that came out to perform for us,” station manager Will Mandel said. “This has been really special to see come together, and we’re so glad that it’s all been working out.”
The festival first launched in 1999, three years before the station signed on. It was originally marketed as a substance-free community event meant to serve as an alternative to the Mifflin Street Block Party; today it celebrates the end of summer and welcomes students back to Madison.
